Can you become a plumber without an apprenticeship?

Adult learners practising plumbing in a workshop

Quick answer

Yes. Many adults learn plumbing without an apprenticeship by studying the theory, practising on real fittings, and starting with small domestic jobs like taps, toilets and leaks. A structured course with real teacher support makes it much faster and safer.

Why apprenticeships don't suit everyone

  • Limited places and long waiting lists.
  • Low wages while training — hard for adults with bills.
  • Fixed hours that don't fit with an existing job or family.

The alternative path

  1. Learn the theory: water systems, stopcocks, valves, fittings, the SSS seal rule.
  2. Practise at home on spare fittings and your own taps and toilets.
  3. Get hands-on time at a practical course.
  4. Start with friends and family, then small paid jobs.
  5. Keep learning, add skills and grow your prices.

Stay within your skills

Start with simple jobs you understand well. Turn down work you are not ready for. Never touch gas — that requires Gas Safe registration. Get public liability insurance before paid work.
