Pressure vs flow
Pressure is how hard the water is pushed. Flow is how much comes out. A simple flow test: time how long it takes to fill a 1 litre jug. Under 6 seconds is good for a basin; much slower means something is restricting it.
One tap is weak
- Aerator: unscrew the tip of the spout and soak it in vinegar to remove limescale.
- Isolation valve: make sure the slot is fully in line with the pipe.
- Flexi tail: some have a small filter at the tap end that blocks.
- Cartridge: limescale in the cartridge can reduce flow.
- Tap type: high-pressure taps on a low-pressure system will always be weak.
Whole house is weak
- Stopcock not fully open after a repair.
- Shared supply with neighbours.
- Old narrow lead or iron supply pipe.
- A leak on the supply pipe.
- Water company works in the area — check their website.
Gravity systems
Many UK homes have a cold water tank in the loft feeding the hot water cylinder. The pressure depends on the height of the tank above the tap, so upstairs showers and hot taps can be gentle. This is normal for that system, and taps must be chosen for low pressure.
